Grants are hard to get, so ISAS staff are very pleased to have been awarded £9,400 by “Awards for All” to help maintain its services to the Irish community, particularly the elderly.

The money will support expansion of the programme of meetings for pensioner groups, where elderly members of the community can get together to see or make friends, enjoy a cup of tea, take part in various activities, or get help from one of the ISAS specialist advisers.

Groups already meet in Hammersmith and Hanwell, but the demand in Ealing is high, so ISAS wants to use the money to set up a new meeting in Greenford and provide a drop-in advice service in Northolt.

The local Irish community turned out in force to attend the official launch of the Irish Support & Advice Service in the London Borough of Ealing. The speakers at the ceremony were the First Secretary at the Embassy of Ireland, Gerry Kelly, the Deputy Mayor of Ealing, Mrs Kumar, the Chair of the ISAS Board, Dermot Murphy, and the Director of ISAS, Mike McGing. All emphasised the relevance and importance of the service in order to help people lead more fulfilled lives. The Leader of Ealing Council, Councillor Jason Stacy, came to the ceremony, and a number of other Irish agencies set up stands to inform those attending about their activities.

Many of those attending come to the Pensioners Group which meets weekly in Hanwell and has rapidly established itself as a meeting place for the Irish in Ealing. There is also a drop-in advice service available at Ealing Community Resource Centre. There were several enquiries during the event about problems people attending would like help with.
